The Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) is going to be in charge again in Sikkim. The SKM contested the election independently this time around due to the termination of its alliance with the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP).
The opposition leader, Pawan Kumar Chamling Rai, who leads the Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF), lost in both places he was running for. The SDF only won in one area called Shyari, where they had a candidate who switched sides from another party.
The Sikkim Assembly Elections 2024 coincided with the first phase of the Lok Sabha Elections on 19 April. 147 candidates were competing for seats in the 32 Assembly areas. The assembly elections recorded a voter turnout of 79.77 per cent. Meanwhile, the counting of votes for the general elections on June 4.
In the elections held in 2019, the SKM won 17, the exact number required to form the government. The Sikkim Democratic Front SDF which had won the 2014 elections ended up with 15 seats.
The elections to both the assembly and Lok Sabha were held simultaneously on April 11 2019. Sikkim CM Chamling, Hamro Sikkim Party (HSP) working president Bhaichung Bhutia and Chamling’s younger brother Rup Narayan Chamling were among the prominent candidates in the fray in the assembly polls.
Sikkim is the only state to have elected regional parties to power in all the assembly elections since 1979. This is due to the strong sentiment of the people who are wary of the national parties.
Despite its modest size, Sikkim assumes a significant role within India's political framework owing to its strategic positioning along international frontiers.
